What are the top five tips for planning music for my wedding ceremony?

Wedding ceremonies are truly magical moments, and as 2 of Harps we have been extremely lucky to have witnessed many couples tying the knot, and sharing their special moment with them and their guests.

Music can really transform a wedding ceremony from lovely to incredible. We strongly believe that music is the soundtrack to your life. It captures moments and keeps them in your memories. So when you hear that specific song or tune, it takes you right back and you can relive the moment over and over again.

In this blog, we have answered the top five questions you might have when planning music for your wedding ceremony. So sit back, and let us guide you through the process!

What are the different parts of my wedding ceremony?

There are usually four main parts to your wedding ceremony;

  1. The seating of the guests (before you arrive)
  2. The entrance of the bride or groom
  3. The signing of the register or commemorative certificate
  4. Exit of the bridal party and guests

2. What type of music is best for the seating of the guests?

The seating of the guests is when your friends and family first enter the ceremony area and find their seats, ready for when you walk down the aisle. Live music is the perfect way to not only create a relaxing and romantic atmosphere, but to also entertain your guests whilst they are waiting for your arrival. Not sure about whether you need live music for your wedding day? Here’s a blog to help you weigh up the pros and cons https://2ofharps.com/2022/03/05/is-booking-live-music-really-necessary-for-my-wedding-day/

First, we would recommend to think about the type of ambience you would like to create. This is really important, as it sets the tone for the rest of your wedding day. Try matching the style of music to your wedding theme. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Boho, relaxed and informal

Try light acoustic covers of pop tunes

2. Rustic, chic, barn, outdoor

Stripped back classics and romantic ballads are a great choice

3. Modern and industrial

We would recommend indie folk and alternative folk

4. Classical, elegant and minimalist

Choose contemporary classical instrumental pieces

3. What type of music is best for the wedding ceremony entrance?

The entrance is probably one of the most important music choices you will have to make for your wedding day. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase your personality, or set a traditional tone for the rest of the ceremony.

It’s really up to you to decide what kind of song or piece of music you both choose, it can either be a personal favourite, something you’ve always dreamt of walking down the aisle to, or a traditional favourite such as Pachelbel’s Canon or the Bridal March.

Top Tip!

If you’re a non traditional couple, and have booked a musician such as a harpist, why not ask them to play an acoustic version of one of your favourite songs!

4. How many songs should I choose for the signing of the register?

Although the signing of the register is now digital, this still remains a beautiful moment during the ceremony, where you as a couple will sign a commemorative certificate and have photos taken with the witnesses, family and/or friends.

Normally, we would recommend two to three songs or pieces to have played during the signing of the register. These can be either songs that fit your theme, Disney classics for your Princess wedding, classical romantic pieces or acoustic pop covers. Something that will keep your guests entertained, as signing the register and photos can take around ten minutes. There’s nothing worse than awkward silence!

5. What kind of song should I choose for the exit of the wedding ceremony?

You have been announced as a newly married couple, now it’s time to head to your drinks reception and celebrate. Let this be the moment that sets the tone for the rest of your wedding day.

Choose something uptempo, lively, and full of happy positive energy. Good vibes all round.
